VLOG

Watch this insightful video on Knowledge Skills And Abilities and how it correlates with the semiconductor industry.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities, often abbreviated as KSA, are three distinct yet interrelated factors determining an individual’s job or task competency. Knowledge refers to the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. It is often gained through education, training, or experience, for example, knowledge about computer programming, financial laws, or medical procedures. Skills are the practical applications of knowledge in real-world scenarios. Skills can be technical, like the ability to code in python, or soft, like effective communication or problem-solving skills. Abilities are the innate or acquired capabilities to perform tasks. Abilities include physical capabilities, like strength or agility, and mental capabilities, like logical reasoning or creativity.

GOVERNMENT

US state New York plans to invest $1 Billion to expand chip research. The plan is expected to create 700 new permanent jobs and retain thousands more, and includes the purchase of a new version of one of the world’s most expensive and sophisticated manufacturing machines, along with the construction of a new building to house it. The initiative should draw $9 billion in additional investments from chip-related companies, according to state officials. They expect it to boost New York’s chances to be selected to host a new National Semiconductor Technology Center, a planned centerpiece of the research portion of federal money that Congress allocated in 2022 as part of the CHIPS Act.

Japan steps up support for its semiconductor industry. Tax breaks to supplement targeted subsidies, the latest of which supports power semiconductors for electric vehicles. Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party plans to include 10 years of incentives for the semiconductor and other industries in a tax reform package that is likely to take effect next year.

US state of New York on Monday announced a plan to create a new semiconductor research laboratory at an industry-government-academia facility in Albany by investing $10 billion jointly with U.S. tech giant IBM Corp., major Japanese chipmaking gear maker Tokyo Electron Ltd. and others.

South Korea And Netherlands to form ‘chip alliance’ for supply chain coordination and vowed to formally establish a “chip alliance,” indicating a significant step in advancing bilateral hi-tech exchanges – a move that would benefit U.S. President Joe Biden’s initiative to establish an alternative supply chain that requires less of China.

INDUSTRY

SEMI is expecting the global semiconductor equipment sales to reach record US$124 billion in 2025. Global semiconductor equipment sales are forecast to drop 6.1% to $100 billion in 2023 but rebound to $124 billion by 2025, with growth across all segments. Wafer fab and back-end segments will recover post-2023, driven by new fabs and technology needs.

ASML and Samsung have struck a 700 million euro deal to construct a semiconductor research plant in South Korea. This move, coinciding with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's visit to the Netherlands, is part of an effort to establish a "chip alliance" between the nations. The facility will focus on developing advanced semiconductor processing technologies using next-generation extreme ultraviolet (EUV) equipment.

TSMC is increasing advanced packaging capacity to 15,000 Wafers Per Month. TSMC works with several companies to source out orders for its packaging equipment, including big ticket Taiwanese semiconductor names such as ASE and the United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC).

Industry calls for more transatlantic cooperation in semiconductor research. Chips R&D is very expensive and it does not make sense to duplicate capabilities. To get the full strategic value from their multi-billion incentive schemes, EU-US collaboration ‘is a must’.

ACADEMIA

Purdue University and Belgium-based technological innovation organization imec celebrated the grand opening of a research and development hub at the Convergence Center for Innovation and Collaboration on Purdue’s campus. The presence of imec at Purdue will help facilitate groundbreaking advancements in semiconductor technologies.

RESEARCH

Pohang University of Science and Technology (Postech) has developed a technology for thermoelectric semiconductor materials by replacing toxic and rare metals with environmentally friendly materials (silicon).

TOOLS

ALLPROS.eu is a reference point that leverages the widest possible range of the electronics value chain in the European Union.

It consists of:

Observatory: An international observatory made up of a highly visual technology radar to map the best practices and use cases. The observatory helps to provide a greater understanding of the latest developments in the semiconductor market.

Marketplace: The Marketplace is composed of best practices and cross-sector synergies and effectively shares the results of start-ups, SMEs and large companies of the value chain.

Thematic Working Groups (TWGs): The platform supports the Thematic Working Groups to track the technical evolution of the processor and semiconductor technologies.

JOBS

ASM brings $300 million expansion, hundreds of jobs to Scottsdale. Over a period of up to five years to design and construct the new state-of-the-art site on more than 20 acres in Scottsdale, Arizona. This total investment is a combination of capital expenditures related to infrastructure and lab equipment, and includes operational expenses such as the additional research and engineering jobs created with the expansion.
